The following morning…

Jacob had worked late at the restaurant last night, and it had been one of my only nights off. Unsurprisingly, I’d spent a lot of my evening pondering the roses and what Matilda had said the previous afternoon.

While I was all for honesty and truth and secrets being out in the open, I had a resistance to telling Jacob about the roses.

To me, it seemed more logical to talk to Shawn first, get him to stop leaving roses on my doorstep, and then let bygones be bygones. Fewer issues caused, no room for conflict and trouble that neither of us needed in our lives.

Jacob and I were happy, and I didn’t want anything to ruin that after what we’d been through as a couple—mostly on account of my drama.

And if it wasn’t Shawn sending the roses…?

I should talk to Aunt Sof. She’d know who might be doing this if it isn’t Shawn.

What sense did it make for Shawn to send me roses after I’d told him I was happy with Jacob?

I sat in my favorite spot at the table in the backyard, wrapped up tight in my fluffy PJ robe, the morning chill brushing against my cheeks. It wasn’t cold enough to stay inside, particularly since Jacob had set up a fire for us in a portable fire pit.

He was inside right now, brewing up another pot of coffee and fixing us breakfast.

The house still needed some work, but piece by piece, we’d started fixing it up. New paint here, sanding down the wood there, fixing broken pieces, and the next step would be talking to contractors.

Jacob’s phone lit up on the outdoor table, and I glanced over, catching a glimpse of the notification.

It was a reminder that flashed across the screen.

Go to jewelry store and check out rings.

My heart froze in my chest, and I forgot to breathe.

I reached out a hand, considering picking up his phone, then shook my head. It wasn’t my place to meddle in Jacob’s affairs. Privacy was a big deal to me. At least when it came to people who weren’t murder suspects.

Rings. He’s looking at rings.

The screen door clapped behind me before I could think too much about it, and Jacob’s footsteps crunched through the grass.

“Here you go,” Jacob said. He planted a kiss on my cheek and placed a plate of Eggs Benedict in front of me.

“You really should let me do more of the cooking,” I said. “I can barely handle the guilt of having delicious meals cooked for me every day when you spend the rest of your day cooking in the kitchen at the restaurant.”

“Cooking is one of my favorite things to do,” Jacob said. “Apart from spending time with you.”

My heart fluttered, and the nerves at what I’d seen on his phone increased. I opened my mouth to say something, then thought better of it. Jacob knew I wasn’t quite ready to get married yet.

But it wasn’t a bad thing that he was thinking about the future.
